Why do some breeds, such as Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherd Dogs, and Rottweilers grab things with their mouths, especially as puppies?

All of these breeds were created to do work, especially work that involved using their mouths. Retrievers…. retrieve! The retrievers were created to pick things up and carry them back to their owners, especially dead birds. The German Shepherd and Rottweilers were created to be police dogs, so retrieving, and biting, were part of their “job description”. Thus, they have a higher desire to put things in their mouths than some other breeds.

When a puppy puts things it its mouth… the dog isn’t being “bad”, it is exploring its environment, and most likely, playing. These are NOT behaviors that should cause you to discipline or punish your dogs!!! You need to just give the dogs an appropriate Manners lesson, to show them what they can put in their mouths and what they should leave alone or drop.

If your dog is annoying you with this kind of behavior, it is inappropriate to get angry. You are blowing it with your dog. Your dog needs training, plain and simple. Go hire professional help.
