I’ve been following dog theft stories for about a year. It is a real risk, especially if you have 1.) a high value dog; 2.) pit bull; or 3.) puppy. Some of these thefts are easy because the dogs were left unsupervised in the yard or a vehicle. Others were taken as part of a general robbery. Some were armed hold ups, taken away from the owners as they walked their dogs. Others were stolen from pet stores, animal shelters, or from animal welfare groups. And some were stolen when meeting an unknown buyer off of the internet, such as a Craigslist ad.
Criminals are after your dog. Criminals will steal anything they think can make them money.
Also, make sure you aren’t buying or adopting a stolen dog. It isn’t yours, and you will have to give it back.
