So, you and your boyfriend are considering getting a dog.
The first thing to consider isn’t what kind of dog you should get. Instead, you should consider what kind of relationship you and your boyfriend have.
The average unmarried, adult couple stays together for about 6 years. The average dog is going to live between 10 to 12 years. Logically, one of you is going to end up with that dog in the end. So, this needs to be discussed before you ever get a dog. Someone has to agree that they will get the dog if the relationship breaks up. Put it in writing, too.
Dogs need a home with stability, time, finances, love, training, supervision and commitment from their owners. They need pretty much the same things that kids need in a home.
Dogs are abandoned to shelters after relationship breakups. Dogs in shelters will be put to death if the dog can’t find a home.
You could be getting a dog that will ultimately die when your relationship dies.
So, unless you are ready to make a lifetime commitment to the custody and welfare of the dog, then, at the very least, don’t get a puppy. If you are going to get a dog, then why not get an older rescue dog? Those dogs need homes, too, and are often overlooked. Once you are sure your relationship is “forever”, then consider getting a puppy.
And if your relationship is very new, or is rocky… then don’t get a dog right now.
