Do you have a dog that grabs your pant legs?

I have worked with a number of dogs that grab at pant legs, or even shoes, as you stand or walk by.

I break these into two categories. Some dogs are just needing a Manners lesson. They just have an annoying habit that needs to be changed. The second type of dog has something more serious or unpleasant going on. Those dogs need more than a Manners lesson. There is a serious problem going on.

In either case, you should hire a professional behaviorist to sort out what is going on. If it is just a manners thing, such as with a puppy, then that is pretty straightforward to fix, and I’m sure you have other annoying behaviors that need to be addressed. If the dog is over 4 months of age, then you should also enroll your dog in a good Basic Obedience program. If it is this second category, where the dog appears to be obsessive, then the average dog trainer won’t be of much help, and you are in over your head. You need a good dog behaviorist to figure out what is going on. I have seen these things develop into serious aggression where it became dangerous to walk past such a dog.
