How do you tell your kids you’ve decided to not keep your puppy?

Many times, people get a puppy without thinking. They get the dog, but have no plan for dealing with the dog. They are irresponsible and immature. Mature people make quality decisions. They think in advance. They don’t make a major life decision without talking it out. Getting a dog is a major life decision.

Puppies don’t just grow on trees. They aren’t inanimate objects that are ready to go once ripe. They require the same kind of effort it takes to properly raise a child. They need socialization, supervision, containment when unsupervised (crib or playpen), the home needs to be childproofed, exercise, sleep, comfort, food, potty times, and training. Doing all of that makes you a good parent. Not doing that gets you a visit from the authorities.

There is no way to tell kids that you are being a flake. They will know you are being a flake. Even if they are very young, they will see you being a hypocrite and they will remember it. They will know if you are lying to them, too, about why the puppy is leaving the home. Then, they will grow up to be just as irresponsible as you are.

If you can’t handle the puppy, then fine. Make sure the puppy is returned to the breeder. Or it goes to a no-kill shelter or reputable rescue organization so it has a chance at not being put to death or abused. But, you have to ask yourself why things got to this point. It is harmful for puppies to be shuffled from one home to another to another to a shelter and so forth. Tell your kids the truth, and then live with it.
