Do You Want A Calm And Submissive Dog?

Have you ever considered what these terms mean?

Can a dog remain calm… greeting you when you get home, playing, jogging, coming when called, heeling, eating, guarding the property, fetch, tug of war, scent detection, protecting you and your family, defending themselves, hunting, swimming, doing agility, or on a hike? Is any of that “calm”? If a dog is to remain calm all the time, then don’t let your dog do any of these activities. And if you get any hint of your dog being other than calm, do you want to be the one to dominate them until they are?

How about your dog being “submissive”? What is submissive? Generally, it is considered a lack of assertiveness and accepting the authority of another. It is demonstrated by appeasement behaviors, which are a reaction to the threatening behavior of others. What does that looks like? Avoiding eye contact, displacement behaviors, flattened ears, licking lips, lowered or tucked tail, rolling over, whining and yawning.

How is dominance acquired over another in a relationship? Let’s ask an authority (paraphrased): “[Dominance is acquired through] social interactive behaviors regarding status/ rank; Climbing up; Eye contact; Puffing Up; Muscling, Using physical power. It resembles aggression but is not aggression. Satisfied when a sense of power is reached. More pronounced in males than females.” – Armin Winkler, Rivanna K9 Services

Do you want to behave that way towards your dog?

Furthermore, “Defensive feelings may occur if a dog feels dominated and overpowered.

So, to force a dog into a submissive attitude, and to enforce calmness, the other dog or person needs to bully the other dog in some fashion, but not to a point where the other dog decides to fight back. And that change in status needs to be maintained during the entire relationship.

So, let me get this straight. You want a dog to always be calm and continually emits appeasement behaviors with you and everyone else, without ever defending themselves?

Is that the type of dog you want? Is that the type of relationship you want?

I recommend that you buy a cheap carpet, instead. I don’t want that life for any dog.

Plan accordingly.
