Really? Should you make your dog meet strange dogs? On walks? At dog parks? In your neighborhood? In your home? We can impose either reasonable or unreasonable expectations on our dogs. You should learn the difference.
How would you feel if I forced you to greet strangers? How would you feel if strangers came up to you, touched you, sniffed you in your private areas, and even threatened you? What if I forced your kids and family members to meet strangers and allowed strangers to invade their personal space without permission? And what if I just opened your front door and invited strangers into your home?
You wouldn’t like it.
No animal likes that, either. None.
And when you do that to a dog repeatedly, and they complain about it, you call them “reactive”? And then you threaten them if they complain? Do you think your dog’s protests are going to get better or worse?
It is NOT normal for any canine species to just accept, without reservation and without checking the other canine out, to allow that other animal to invade their space, to force them to interact, or allow them into their family group uninvited, or enter their territory uninvited. Try that with any mammal species and there will be a fight. That’s what canines do. That’s what we do, too.
Are there ways of managing contacts with strange dogs and people to minimize conflicts? Yes. Will all dogs learn to accept strange dogs in their personal space, family, or territory? No. Can you make a dog like another dog, even if you adopt that dog into your home? No. Can’t we all just get along? No.
We allow friends and family to do things that we would never allow with strangers. Same with dogs.
Quit trying to “fix” dogs that aren’t broken.
Plan accordingly.
