If you have an antisocial dog, you should immediately hire a professional dog trainer to show you how to properly supervise, manage and train your dog.

It takes a lot of patience to get to know some dogs, especially an antisocial dog. An antisocial dog doesn’t want your company if you are a stranger. It doesn’t want to get to know you. It doesn’t appreciate or accept your social greetings.

As I write this article, I’m house sitting for a friend while they are on their wedding anniversary. I have known one of their dogs for nearly 2 years, but he still doesn’t accept me or trust me. For the first 24 hours, he didn’t eat. I have now been staying here for 5 days, and the best I’m getting is for him to come up and sniff my leg. I also know that if you force yourself on him, he will bite. He is an antisocial dog.

I spoke to another customer who had some guests over to his house this past weekend. One of his guests tried to force a greeting on his German Shepherd Dog. Before the night was over, the dog had gone over and nipped her on the hand and then on the leg.

I know people like this, too. Don’t we all? They take a long time to warm up to you, and even longer to trust you. If you force yourself on them, you will get a harsh response if they aren’t ready.

I never just go up and pet a dog. I take the time to see if the dog accepts me, otherwise I’m risking a bite or worse. It’s not the way we’d like it to be, but that’s the way it really works in the dog world. Not all dogs are sociable. On my part, I can read dog behavior, and have good instincts to know when a dog is thinking about biting. Most people have no clue, and some people will even try to override what the owner says and force themselves onto a dog, only to get bitten.

Such bites are not always from shy dogs. Some antisocial dogs. Some guard dogs are very antisocial. We have all heard of the “one man dog”, a dog that is only loyal to one person. It’s not wise to mess with these dogs. They were bred to be guards and they will attack if you try to interact with them. They aren’t afraid. They are socially aggressive. I have seen varying degrees of this kind of thing. I had a close call once with a Bullmastiff, which could have sent me to the hospital if it had been a bit more intense. So, I don’t even pet the friendliest looking dogs since I see so many dogs that don’t give much warning before biting.

Dogs are social animals. There are ways to get to know them, and some take more time than others. Some dogs you don’t want to know. It is better to not pet a dog than get a nasty bite. Listen to the owner about their dog, and also trust your instincts if you sense danger even if the owner says it is all right. Be safe. Take time. You don’t need to pet every dog you meet.
