About Sam The Dog Trainer

If you’re looking for practical, modern dog training that actually works in real homes with real families, you’re in the right place. After more than 30 years of full-time, in-home work with dogs of every age and breed, I’ve learned that the smartest approach is almost always the lightest touch. The idea is to be smarter, not tougher, so both dog and owner come out ahead.

Founded in 1996, Sam The Dog Trainer is a private, Phoenix-based company that provides in-home and online dog training services specifically designed to strengthen the relationship between dogs and their owners. We serve the greater Phoenix/Scottsdale metro area with in-home lessons and offer virtual options for clients nationwide. The methods and tools keep evolving based on what actually delivers results in the field—that’s why ongoing upgrades matter.

Sam Basso, founder and owner, is a professional dog trainer and behaviorist with decades of hands-on experience. I’ve been called on by local TV media for dog-related issues, worked deeply in Arizona’s animal rescue community as Founder of Citizens Animal Welfare Society, co-founder of the PATCHES project to support private shelter efforts in Maricopa County, and co-founder of specialized therapy dog programs. I publish the PoochMaster blog and have trained everything from common family breeds to rare ones across all ages. No harsh methods. Ever. Working with dogs is my full-time job, which means I’m often already in your part of the Valley most days. Lessons are scheduled around a practical weekly route so we make the best use of everyone’s time.

What matters most is the outcome: for over 30 years I’ve helped transform dogs—despite all the usual challenges—into well-adjusted, loving, and obedient family members right here in Arizona and beyond.

The Basso Method

I accomplish this through my own holistic, customized approach called the Basso Method. It takes complex ideas from canine science, ethology, and performance management and turns them into something fun, humane, intelligent, and practical for everyday owners.

Behavior is not just the actions you see—the barking, lunging, or even the “sit” command. Behavior is the whole system that makes those actions possible: the dog’s state, history, environment, relationships, and available options in that moment. The issue is not usually that the dog “won’t” do something. What matters is understanding the conditions that allow the dog to succeed or cause the system to break down under load.

In practice, this means I look at medical factors (always in consultation with your veterinarian), physical needs, environmental influences, and social dynamics. I’ve worked with families where adult dogs were still having accidents indoors despite everyone’s best efforts—consulting vets to rule out issues, addressing household stress, and adjusting relationships between dogs in the home. That’s the kind of root-cause work that produces lasting change instead of chasing symptoms.

Sam’s Five Core Principles

The Basso Method rests on five foundational principles I’ve refined through three decades of real-world lessons:
  1. Successful dog ownership starts with happy, low-stress relationships. Dogs should want to do what we ask because they’re comfortable and joyful—not because they’re forced into a miserable, inert state. Content dogs learn more readily and live better lives.
  2. Obedience requires real skill mastery. Well-trained dogs don’t happen by accident. They understand what’s being asked and have the capacity to deliver it. This takes time, patience, and realistic pacing—some dogs simply need longer than others. I never push a dog or owner beyond what they’re ready for.
  3. One-size-fits-all almost never works. Every dog is an individual. That’s why a thorough initial evaluation is so important. It covers the dog’s history, personality, breed traits, family goals, and current state so we can build a plan that actually fits.
  4. Ethics and welfare come first. I don’t use blunt-force or harsh techniques—they’re not only unkind but often ineffective. The Basso Method is built around a genuinely light touch and respect for the dog’s experience.
  5. Great training starts with genuine passion and energy. Knowledge matters, but so does love and respect for dogs and the people who live with them. That authentic connection carries everyone through the process.
These aren’t abstract theories. They’re what I apply every single day in living rooms across the Valley.
