What do you do when a puppy bites, or threatens to bite you, for taking away a toy, bone, food, or rawhide?
First, the WORST thing you can do is to punish the puppy in any way. That means no yelling, hitting, slapping, spanking, rolling the dog on its back, holding its mouth shut, banishing it to a crate or some other kind of time out. No correction is better than a correction.
It is NATURAL for animals to guard their prey. Toys, food, bones, rawhides, tennis shoes, socks, kids toys, rocks, newspapers… you get the idea… are all “prey” to many puppies. They aren’t the same as live prey, such as birds, lizards, or mammals, but they are dummies that represent those live animals to your puppy in many respects. Yet, we need to be able to take anything from our dog. So, how do you bridge the gap between a dog wanting to guard an object, and you needing to take the object without being attacked?
In these circumstances, you need to be shown how to work with this to make it better and not worse. I could type pages and pages of material here and you still might not understand. And every puppy is different, so the total dog needs to be examined, not just the specific behavior. So, it’s now time to hire a professional before this gets worse.
