WRONG ANSWER FROM YOUR DOG TRAINER: “No, it creates problems with dominance when they become an adult.”
CORRECT ANSWER: No. No it doesn’t. Dominance is about competitiveness. If you have a dog that is socially competitive, it won’t matter where the dog sleeps, even if the dog sleeps in the barn. If you want a dog that is closely bonded to you, working with you, and looking out for the family and home, then you want the dog to be with you. It’s like the old saying, the family that plays together, stays together. It is UNNATURAL for a canine to be kept isolated from social interaction with it’s pack. Any time you mess with what would be a normal behavior, you will get an abnormal behavior. You are MORE likely to have a dominance problem, especially dominance aggression, from a dog that doesn’t bond to you properly.
Dogs that guard the bedroom or bed have a specific behavioral problem that should be addressed. That needs professional help.
Otherwise, go ahead, let your dog sleep in the bedroom. And like all dogs, train your dog. You don’t have to make your dog live in some prison.
