So, what do you do when you realize that you shouldn’t have purchased a dog?
The first thing to do is to see if the seller will allow you to return the dog. The best, most committed breeders will take a dog back. That doesn’t mean you’ll get your money back, nor is it right to expect them to refund you the money. But now, the dog needs a new home, and they are probably the best ones to know who might want a dog like yours. It is better, and more important now, to find the dog a new home than to try and find some legal technicality that will get you your money back.
If that isn’t an option, then the next thing to do is to look for a reputable rescue group. There are rescue groups that specialize in different breeds. There are rescue groups that specialize in certain geographic areas. Do some searching on the internet, or ask local veterinarians, groomers and trainers for references. You’d be surprised how many folks out there will be willing to help.
Another option is to give the dog away to a local humane society or shelter. But, not all are created equal. It is a MUST to make sure you are dealing with a reputable NO KILL shelter. Many shelters will put all excess dogs down once or twice a week. Your dog won’t stand a chance there, and will probably be dead within a week. Sometimes, the only way you can find a no kill shelter is to look many miles, perhaps hundreds of miles, away from where you live. So, find such a place, call them on the phone and do your homework, and if all looks good, then go drive there on your day off and get it done.
Or, maybe you know someone who would like a dog. Ask your friends. I have worked with a number of dogs that were given to friends, and the original owner paid them to take the dog, and even paid for full obedience training for the dog. This is an excellent way to find the dog a good home, with someone you know and trust. You were going to have to pay to house and feed and train the dog anyway over the upcoming years, so you might as well pay it out now.
Or, maybe you are just having second thoughts, not sure if you can handle this dog. You feel overwhelmed. A good dog trainer can show you ways of making it a LOT easier. I have a ton of tricks for making life easier with a difficult puppy or dog. That’s a lot of what I do every day. I know how to live successfully with a dog.
The WORST option is to try and sell the dog. You can never trust what people will tell you. There are phony buyers out there that will take your dog, pretending to be good, and then putting the dog out as a “bait dog” for pit fighting. They will take that nice dog of yours, pour acid on the dog, or set them on fire, enraging the dog, and then put it in a ring to train another dog to fight. Your dog will be killed in the process. Go look up the term “bait dog” on the internet. See what I’m talking about. Rescue groups know how to screen out the phonies. You won’t know. And you may be condemning your dog to torture and death.
