Can a lost dog find its way home? Probably not.
In order for a lost dog to find home, the dog needs to have developed trailing skills. Thus, old time hunting dogs were able to go miles away from the hunter’s camp and then come back when the hunt was over. But, modern city dogs never get the opportunity to develop those skills, so when they get away from us, they usually won’t make it back home unless we go and find them ourselves.
Thus, as part of any advanced dog obedience program, I teach dogs some basic scent, tracking and trailing work. The more you do, the better chance the dog can find its way back to you if it gets away from you. Otherwise, they don’t have a clue.
