How does dog rescue work? What model should we use?
I liken dog rescue to how a well run, prosperous used car dealer operates. A good used car dealer is a successful, prosperous business… good location, excellent inventory, well trained and professional salespeople, a great repair shop, great policies and procedures, excellent marketing, excellent management… and a well defined pipeline of cars coming into and selling out of the business.
A car dealer sends an experienced representative to the auto auction to look at cars available for bid. Or, the same representative meets a seller in the car lot to look at a potential trade in. The first step is to see if there is a vehicle that the dealership feels it can sell for a profit, fitting the type of car that they specialize in, to a qualified buyer. If so, the dealer bids on the car, purchases it, and then transports the vehicle back to the dealership. Once the vehicle is back at the dealership, it is evaluated by the repair shop, given a thorough examination, and a repair cost estimate is created. An educated assessment is made as to the value of the car, and what it is going to take to sell the car. And if it will be profitable, then the dealership commences to do the repairs. Once repaired and ready for display, and a marketing effort is planned, the car is driven to an appropriate place on the car lot, and the salespeople are educated as to the features, benefits, and proposed marketing and pricing of the vehicle. The car is then made available for sale to prospective customers. Eventually a qualified customer makes an offer, it is negotiated, and it is sold, along with a warranty. The dealership wants return business and referrals, so they toss in a couple of free oil changes. The profits earned are then used to buy the next cars which will be put through the pipeline.
Dog rescue is a similar process. Here are the following steps:
1.) Evaluate the dog’s suitability and need to be rescued;
2.) Diagnose the problems entailed in rescuing this dog;
3.) Set a goal for this rescue: what is the expected outcome… type of home, how long in rescue, cost, adoption fee, who will be helping, where will the dog go, and so forth;
4.) Definition of a rescue plan for this dog so as to meet the rescue goal;
5.) Implementation of the rescue plan;
6.) Placement of the dog in a new home;
7.) Periodic follow up to ensure the dog has been successfully rehomed;
8.) Evaluation of how this rescue went, obtaining feedback, and using those results to help refine and improve future rescue efforts.
If you are not operating with an organized plan, using a Model Dog Rescue outline, then you are going to make mistakes that cost the lives of these dogs, harm relationships, damage your reputation, and further contribute to the problems that all rescue operations face.
