Do you have a dog that will attack your other dog when it sees a strange dog? I have worked with a lot of dogs like this.
The worst thing you can do in a situation like this is to physically or verbally correct your dogs. It is totally inappropriate to try to insert dominance and punishment into such a situation. You will only make the situation worse. If your dog trainer is suggesting these solutions, then they are NOT qualified for this kind of problem and you need to find help elsewhere.
There are solutions to this kind of thing, but you shouldn’t be attempting to do them on your own. You definitely shouldn’t be watching some TV celebrity dog trainer and then trying to imitate what they do with your dog. You can be seriously injured by your own dog. You don’t know what you are doing. Just turn around and go home, find a qualified dog behaviorist, and work out the problems.
I don’t post answers on how to fix this kind of thing online. The reason I don’t is because it takes years and years to get good at working with aggressive dogs. You can’t be a novice dog trainer and do it right. And you definitely can’t do it if you have never successfully done this kind of training before. I don’t want people, or their dogs, to get hurt. I want them to be responsible and get professional advice and homework.
OK, go make the phone call now…
