What is the process for assessing new homes for rescue dogs? Let me ask you this…

Are you being systematic in your placement of a dog with a rescue volunteer or new home?

1.) A written file should be started with each dog, including identification information, known history, medical / health data, and behavioral assessment data.

2.) The new caregiver, volunteer or new owner, needs assessment regarding their experience, needs, beliefs, knowledge of care and behavior, and social situation (other people and animals), job situation, health issues, and such.

3.) The new environment needs to be formally assessed, looking for escape and health hazards, crowding, comfort, exercise opportunities, play opportunities, and such.

4.) Lastly, financial and other support services required should be assessed, such as food cost, training requirements, toys, supplies, and whether the new caregiver has the resources to support the care of the dog, or if there will be a need to supplement their financial resources.

Before you look for new homes for rescue dogs, you need to first establish a procedure. Do you do all of this in a formal way? I bet a lot of you don’t, and that contributes to dogs that end up in trouble.

New homes for rescue dogs should be set up for success, not for failure. A lack of planning has cost a number of adoptable dogs their lives as they slip through the cracks of bad planning.
