There are usually three reasons why a dog will break out of its crate…

1.) Escape: There is no greater motivation for a dog than to escape danger. So, for example, dogs with separation anxiety will try to break out of a crate. Dogs will do what appears to be mutant, science fiction, superhero types of efforts to escape a crate if they are afraid and panicking. They will even severely injure themselves to escape. Sick dogs can sometimes break out of a crate, too.
2.) Dislike: Dogs can get dissatisfied with being in a crate, resenting being in there. They aren’t afraid or panicking. They just don’t like being in there.
3.) Driven: Some dogs aren’t dissatisfied, afraid or panicking. Instead, there is something that they want to get at outside the crate. An intact male dog will break out of a crate to get at a female dog in heat. A guard dog will break out of a crate to get at the intruder. If two dogs are fighting in the home, one dog might try to break out to attack the other dog. Any breed may try to break out if it senses prey outside the crate. And a lonely dog might break out to be with other people or dogs.

HOW TO MAKE IT WORSE: The worst things you can do is to buy a stronger crate; punishing the dog; muzzling the dog; or putting on a bark collar… none of that will fix the problem. Instead, you might just come home to a very bloody scene, or even a dead dog.

WHAT TO DO: If you are dealing with this type of problem, it is time to hire a good dog behaviorist, to figure out why the dog is breaking out, and to come up with a humane solution so the dog can be contained when not supervised. This is a life or death issue.
