Can dogs be selfish?

A selfish dog would be unconcerned with others, and only concerned with their own needs and pleasures.

Animal behaviorists don’t use the word “selfish” when referring to dog behavior. Selfishness is a human trait, not an animal trait. Humans have perceptual abilities regarding “self” and others that dogs can’t exercise.

Dogs can only act as dogs. Female dogs will care for, protect, and nurse their pups. Yet, at a certain age, when the pups are older, that stops. Some dogs will protect their families from the aggressive acts of other animals and strangers, but some dogs won’t. Some dogs will allow you to take a toy or bone from them, and other dogs will guard their toys and bones aggressively.

So, I don’t have any tips for selfish dogs. There isn’t such an animal. Dogs can’t care for you the way a human would.
