Can dogs tell if other dogs are intact (not spayed or neutered)?

Of course. All animals have ways of determining the fertility status of others of their species.

I remember walking my dog, Dillon, at Greenlake Park in Seattle. He was about a year old, and he was intact. Right about that age, I noticed that other male dogs, even dogs that were neutered, would growl at him. They could tell he was intact.

Animals pick up on extremely small details about others of their species. Things that we can’t see with our own eyes. That is partly why there are still so many mysteries regarding animal behavior. Researchers will tell you that they still don’t understand a lot about why animals do what they do. We can’t see things that other animals can see.

Think about this. A female penguin lays an egg. The male penguin sits on the egg, and then the female takes off, walking miles to the ocean, to eat. She’s extremely hungry at this point. This male is surrounded by thousands of other male penguins doing the same thing. After a while, the female heads back to find her partner. She approaches a standing flock of penguins… thousands of them. To me, they would all look, sound and smell the same. Yet, she can find him. No human could do that.

So, animals can “see” things about their own species that we can’t figure out. And one of those things is the sexual status of others, such as if they are intact or not.
