The Problem: There are safe ways to transport a dog, and unsafe ways to transport a dog.
The Answer: In most cases, it is unsafe, and sometimes illegal, to transport a dog in the back of a pickup truck. It isn’t reported very often in the news, but dogs are severely injured and killed riding in the back of trucks.
How Do You Know: If you wouldn’t put a 2 year old child in that situation, then it isn’t safe for a dog. Dogs are not indestructible. Yes, I know in the old days, people used to put dogs into the back of trucks, on top of vehicles, or even in the trunk. Those days are gone.
Don’t Be Hard Headed: I know, you probably don’t want to hear this: You’re going to do it anyway, you’re just looking for a justification. Sorry, you won’t get that here. Talk to emergency veterinarians, or firefighters that respond to auto accidents, that have to deal with the resulting dog injuries or deaths.
You are a complete flake if you knowingly put a dog in an unsafe situation. You’re all comfortable, seat belted into your truck, surrounded by windows that protect you from flying rocks, rain, hail, snow, and heat. You have a heater for the cold, and an air conditioner for the hot. You have padded leather or cloth seats. You are surrounded by a cockpit designed to absorb a crash. And you probably have air bags. A dog in the back has none of that. Your truck is a death trap, and you know it.
Go do the right thing.
