Why do so many dogs run away from their owners?
This is one of the major complaints people have about owning their dogs. Their dogs won’t come when called.
First off, many people don’t have trained dogs. I was talking to a man the other day that was complaining that his untrained, 5 year old teacup poodle will chase rabbits, and won’t come back, if let off leash. I had to explain that only advanced dogs can be expected to obey in that type of environment, and he hadn’t done even the most basic level of training with his dog.
The next reason is because you’ve put the dog in an impossible situation. If a dog is terrified of you, or of the situation, then they can’t obey. Some breeds were never meant to obey commands. You aren’t very likely to get a greyhound to obey you when it is in a full chase after a rabbit. They just aren’t programmed that way. It is impossible to get high level obedience titles on a greyhound. So, why put that kind of dog in that kind of situation? There are countless situations where a dog might not obey. This is why it is important for the owner to get lessons, and not just the dog. You will freeze in an emergency. You don’t know what your dog is and isn’t capable of. You are setting your dog up for failure, and possibly a horrible death.
Lastly, there could be something wrong with your relationship with your dog. Every dog should love coming when called. Every dog should be made to feel that is the best thing ever. Is that how your dog feels when you call your dog? If not, then that has to be fixed.
