People argue over the silliest things. One issue of contention is who should clean up the dog’s poop in the yard.

First off, I don’t think it is wise, sanitary or visually attractive to allow dog feces to remain on the property for more than a day. Also, allowing feces to accumulate increases the number of flies in your yard, and makes your yard stink. In fact, I believe that it is best to clean up every time, right after a dog has defecated in the yard. It is much easier that way, and you don’t allow the mess to build up day after day. Just get a pooper scooper type device at the local pet store or hardware store, and have it handy. If you can’t get to it while you are away, then get in a regular habit, at a specific time of day, to clean it all up. Good habits are the best way to go.

Regarding who should do it… I think every capable family member should do the clean up. If you are the one letting the dog outside to eliminate, then go pick up the poop afterwards and don’t leave it for someone else to do. Most kids are capable of learning and doing cleanup, too. If it isn’t feasible to share the dog clean up chores, then one person should be assigned to be the dog’s manager when cleaning up messes.

The same is true as to who should clean up if the dog destroys something, needs regular visits to the veterinarian, or needs medical care when sick.

Practice being responsible instead of fighting about it. Make a plan and then follow through.
