Is Your Dog Ahead Of You, On Or Off Leash?

If a dog is pulling ahead of you whether on leash or off leash, does that mean you are not your dog’s “leader”, that you aren’t the “alpha”, that you are doing something wrong?

Ok, riddle me this, Batman…

If a Bloodhound is pulling ahead on a leash searching a track, does that mean the handler is doing something wrong?

If a Pointer or Spaniel is up ahead of the hunter searching for birds, does that mean the handler is doing something wrong?

If a CQB Tactical Team has breached a door, and sends the dog into the building on a search, to either find contraband or a bad guy, does that mean the handler is doing something wrong?

If scent hounds are released into the woods to chase and corner game, does that mean the handler is doing something wrong?

If a herding dog takes off ahead of the handler to go and round up a herd or flock, does that mean the handler is doing something wrong?

If a guide dog is leading the owner across a street, does that mean the handler is doing something wrong?

If a dog jumps in the car before you get in, does that mean you are doing something wrong?

If your untrained dog is pulling ahead of you on a walk… does that mean you aren’t a good leader, that you aren’t the “alpha”, that you are doing something wrong?

Isn’t it time to stop all this ridiculous pretend “wolf” psychology and start properly interpreting what dogs are doing in relation to their owners?

Have you ever researched anything about wolves at all? Do you know it is normal for members of the pack to take off at times, sometimes for a long time, to later come back to the pack? Was that wolf doing something wrong? Does that wolf’s departure mean that the “alpha” pair, male and female, were not doing their job? If one wolf runs ahead of either of the alpha pair, does the alpha pair threaten that wolf, ever?

Maybe, instead, you either are doing the right thing with your trained dog, or the only thing wrong is that you have an untrained dog. Are you a wolf? Is your dog a wolf? Do you have a well trained dog, or are you just going to take your frustration out on your dog because you won’t put in the work?

Plan accordingly.
