Dogs bark because of how they feel. Barking can be very annoying to some people, so they will try a quick fix, and tape a dog’s mouth shut. Or wiring a dog’s mouth shut. Or using a muzzle.
Will taping, wiring or muzzling a dog’s mouth shut stop his barking?
Here’s what is going to happen: The dog will panic, start breathing harder, desperately scratch at it’s face to remove the tape, and ultimately suffocate to death, or will be brain injured and have to be euthanized. If the dog survives, the tape won’t have taught the dog anything, and so the barking problem will continue. Taping doesn’t ever work, it is cruel, and it is illegal.
The better answer would be to better supervise your dog, and hire a professional dog behaviorist to figure out if there is a way to minimize the noise by addressing what the dog is “saying”. And if that isn’t going to work for you, and you are so angry that you’d do something like this to harm your dog, then find the dog a different home.
If you decide to ignore this advice, and go ahead and tape your dog’s mouth shut… you will be discovered… and then might be charged with aggravated felony animal cruelty, animal torture, and / or animal neglect charges. You can be arrested in front of your family and friends, handcuffed, taken in a police car to the station for fingerprinting, and spend some time in jail with other charged felons, some of which might just attack you in your cell. You may be beaten or raped in jail. We all know this.

What I’ve seen in the news is: typical sentencing of at least one year in prison. These crimes are also so notorious, your picture will appear prominently in the local newspaper, and the story will be picked up by several news services. Your boss will definitely find out. Animal welfare advocates, like my friends and I, follow these types of stories, and we will start a petition to the court to sentence you to the maximum jail time allowable. In some places, convicted animal abusers are now being treated the same way as sexual predators, so you will be monitored with an ankle bracelet and placed on a registry. That means the police will harass you for the rest of your life, your chances of ever getting decent employment will have evaporated. Also, approximately 85% of all people convicted of a crime that are sentenced to at least 1 year in jail, are divorced by their spouses. You will lose your kids, and you will remain financially obligated to take care of them until they are adults, and you will be required to have supervised visits. Felons also lose the right to keep and bear arms, and the right to vote. You will also be barred from ever travelling overseas. You will also be questioned more closely at any airport or border, and if a similar crime happens in the neighborhood, the police will come knocking just to be sure you weren’t involved. Forget about ever getting a decent boyfriend or girlfriend ever again… people will look you up after the first date or so, and they will see you are a convicted animal abuser. Many licenses are off limits to felons, such as real estate, insurance, and stock brokering, just to name a few. It will never go away.
Choose which path you want your life to go on. Maybe you shouldn’t have a dog. Don’t bend over to pick up the soap on the shower floor. Prison sucks. Literally.
