So are you really looking for cheap dog training or do you want your dog problem solved?

Many dog problems require the help of an expert. Yes, the investment per lesson is more, but it takes fewer lessons and each lesson is more likely to solve whatever problem you might have.

Here is an example. I saw a 9 year old pit bull mix the other day. The dog had been through obedience classes. The owners were very firm with this dog’s discipline. They loved their dog. They did the whole Cesar Millan thing with the dog (the “shhh” thing he does; the backpack; the roller blades for exercise; and so forth). And still the dog was having behavioral problems that weren’t solved with all of that. So, in one lesson, that took about an hour and 45 minutes, I walked them through everything they needed to do, and then demonstrated the techniques with their dog. Problem solved. In one lesson. Was it cheap? I don’t know, you tell me. My normal price for a first lesson is $95, but they lived a long way away, so I added an additional $10 for my gasoline cost for the extra miles. For $105 they got the problem fixed. And I let them know that I give free follow up (email, text, phone, or in person), and to let me know if they are having any additional problems.

So, think about it. They had already spent hundreds of dollars on past training that didn’t work. They were doing all the supervision and training that the knew to do. They tried what they saw on that TV show. They even exercised the dog hard for 45 minutes before I arrived. None of that worked. All this other stuff was cheap training. They got the lessons at a well known chain pet store. They spent a lot for that backpack. They spent a lot of hours watching that TV show, trying “do it yourself” cheap training. And they had been putting in a lot of hours. None of that worked.

I have also seen people spend a LOT of money on training that didn’t work. I know of a lady that spent $3,200 on a trainer to help her get her 8 dogs house trained. The guy came for 2 hours. That’s all. For ALL THAT MONEY. And the dogs didn’t get house trained. I charged her for a single lesson, spent 2 hours at her home, put her on a good program that worked, and gave her free follow up along the way. So, was my training “cheaper” or just better? I wish I could get $3,200 for 2 hours worth of work… but I can’t because I’m honest and I won’t rip people off.

I know of another dog, a German Shepherd Dog, that DIDN’T get trained in a $2,500 board and train program. They were almost ready to get rid of the dog because after all of that the dog still wasn’t obedient, but they found me on the internet, read my web page, checked out my references, and trusted me to work it out. I charged them the normal fee of $1,080 for Basic Obedience. We had to start the dog all over again. It was as if the dog had never had any training at all. I have NO IDEA what that other trainer did for all that money. I do know that at the last lesson with that trainer, he slapped the dog across the face with his clipboard, right in front of the owners, for breaking his Sit / Stay command. They were appalled. So, for half the price, I got the dog trained and it all worked out. They kept the dog. They could have saved $2,500 if they had just started with me in the first place.

So, what IS cheap training? You tell me.
